Installation and Commissioning

International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires all vessels that have ballast water capacity and engage in international trade (see exceptions) to have a Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) onboard and implement a Ballast Water Management Plan. IMO mandates that all ballast water must be treated appropriately to remove harmful organisms before discharge. Mr. Marine Ballast can support you with the selection, installation and commissioning of the appropriate BWTS for your vessel.

What is BWTS Installation and Commissioning?

BWTS Installation

BWTS installation refers to the integration of a BWTS in the vessel’s existing ballast water management infrastructure. Mr. Marine Ballast can perform the installation of BWTS on ships that were not originally equipped with the ballast water treatment system. This process is called ballast water treatment retrofit and is essential for compliance with the BWM Convention. The installation of the BWTS facilitates compliance with the D-2 standard, monitoring that the species in the discharged water are within the admissible limits. Furthermore, you will be able to choose from a broad range of reliable BWT Systems makers to install on your vessel, such as Panasia, Erma First, Wuxi BSKY, Hyde Marine and Samsung.

BWTS Commissioning

After the BWTS system is installed onboard, the commissioning process ensures the system functions properly. It integrates the testing and verifying of the system to validate that the ballast water is treated efficiently and that the data is reliable. Some of the commissioning steps integrate:

  • Pre-commissioning checks: Inspection of the BWTS to ensure that all components are installed correctly and correspond to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Calibration: Sensors, instruments, and controls of the BWTS are calibrated to validate precise measurements and optimal performance.
  • Functionality tests: The functional tests verify that all ballast water treatment components and subsystems operate optimally.
  • Performance verification: The performance of the BWTS is tested to ensure it meets the treatment requirements.
  • Documentation: Detailed documentation of the commissioning activities is key, specifically calibration reports, test results, equipment logs, and compliance records.
  • Crew training: Members responsible for BWTS activities must engage in educational training.

By conducting these activities, the commissioning process ensures that the BWTS is properly installed, calibrated, and functioning effectively in treating ballast water. It aims to verify compliance with regulatory requirements, optimize system performance, and equip the crew with the necessary knowledge and skills for system operation and maintenance.

Note: IMO requires all vessels to have an approved BWTS retrofitted at their first renewal survey after the 8th of September 2019.
