Oldham BM 25 Transportable Multigas Monitor

Oldham BM 25 Transportable Multigas Monitor

The Oldham BM 25 is a versatile gas detector capable of detecting a variety of gases, making it highly suitable for various applications, such as the marine industry. This reliable gas detector is powered by a NiMH battery pack, providing up to 170 hours of continuous operation. It offers extensive data logging capabilities, storing information for over four months, including important STEL and TWA values. This makes it ideal for long-term monitoring on marine vessels. In marine settings, where larger areas need to be covered, the Oldham BM 25 can be employed in multiples. These units can be conveniently interconnected using optional alarm transfer kits, enabling the seamless transfer of alarms from one BM 25 to another. This functionality proves especially useful for marine operations that require comprehensive coverage, such as vessel surveillance and monitoring in offshore environments.

To meet the demands of long-term monitoring in classified marine zones, the BM 25 offers compatibility with an intrinsically safe trickle charger. This feature ensures continuous power supply and monitoring reliability even in hazardous maritime environments. Additionally, the Oldham BM 25 provides optional radio communication capabilities. This allows multiple BM 25 devices to communicate on the same network, facilitating efficient data exchange and enabling wireless transmission of critical information to a central controller. This wireless communication feature proves advantageous on vessels and other marine applications, where the seamless flow of information is crucial for safety and operational efficiency.

The BM 25 utilizes a MESH network topology, connecting all hosts in a peer-to-peer manner without a central hierarchy. This net-like structure enables each node to receive, send, and relay data, ensuring robust connectivity throughout the vessel or marine environment. In case of node failure or obstruction, data is automatically rerouted through alternative paths, guaranteeing uninterrupted communication and monitoring on the vessel. With wireless communication occurring via a 2.4 GHz radio, emitting power below 100 mW, the BM 25 enables effective communication over distances of up to 0.6 miles in a line of sight. This range ensures comprehensive coverage within the vessel or marine application, allowing for reliable gas detection and monitoring even in large or complex maritime environments.

The MESH network utilized by the Oldham BM 25 operates on a peer-to-peer connection model, forming a net-like structure without a central hierarchy. This means that each host within the network can both receive and transmit data while also relaying it to other nodes. In the event that a node becomes inaccessible or fails, the data automatically reroutes through an alternative path, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity. It’s important to note that the maximum distance for communication between two devices in the BM 25 network is 0.6 miles in a line of sight. The Mesh Topology offers several benefits, including fast and straightforward deployment, high coverage versatility, and high fault tolerance. This means that the network can be set up quickly and easily, providing extensive coverage options while maintaining the ability to function even if individual nodes experience issues. Additionally, this network configuration significantly reduces the costs associated with both installation and operating the network.

The Oldham BM 25 is equipped with alarm and datalogging capabilities to enhance its functionality. It features a 360° flashing signal for visual alerts and an audible alarm producing a sound level of 103 dB at a distance of 3 feet. The device also provides STEL (Short-Term Exposure Limit) and TWA (Time-Weighted Average) values, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of gas exposure levels. Moreover, the BM 25 has a robust datalogging capacity of more than four months, particularly when configured to detect five gases. To ensure continuous operation, the Oldham BM 25 relies on batteries that can provide up to 170 hours of continuous runtime. Additionally, these batteries can be fully recharged in just 4 1/2 hours, allowing for swift restoration of power. For long-term monitoring in classified zones, the BM 25 supports the use of a safe trickle charger, which helps maintain consistent power supply while adhering to safety regulations.

The SmartWireless® MX 40 Controller serves as an operator interface for the network and provides real-time status display of all network devices. It offers flexibility and scalability, allowing for the creation of an MX 40 network with a combination of up to 16 BM 25 wireless devices and/or up to 32 wireless and/or wired sensors, along with one or more control panels and alarm warning devices. The MX 40 network enables various command functions, including alarm reset, alarm acknowledgement, alarm testing, and radio silence. The control panel provides a comprehensive view of real-time gas concentrations, field device status, battery levels, network RF signal quality, and fault diagnostic conditions. The display indicates alarm status, channel information, gas readings, battery life, and link signal strength. Standard features of the MX 40 Controller include a removable SD card for datalogging purposes. This allows for easy retrieval and analysis of recorded data, enhancing the monitoring and maintenance capabilities of the network.

In addition to its core functionalities, the Model MX 40 provides the capability to integrate Oldham addressable I/O (Input/Output) modules, expanding its range of applications. These modules include a 4-channel 4-20mA input module (DA-4), a 4-alarm relay output module (RL-4), a 4-channel 4-20mA output module (AO-4), and a 4-relay contact input module (DI-4). The Oldham addressable I/O modules can be conveniently mounted within the main system enclosure or installed remotely, simplifying the field wiring process. This flexibility allows for easy customization and adaptation of the MX 40 system to meet specific requirements and optimize the monitoring and control capabilities of the network.
