Schaller Visatron Oil Mist Detection Systems

Schaller Visatron Oil Mist Detection Systems

The VISATRON® family of devices operates by continuously drawing air from every compartment of the crankcase through a wear-free air jet pump powered by compressed air (drive air). The sample flow, comprising the sucked-in atmosphere from the crankcase compartments, passes through an optical channel for measuring turbidity. The turbidity is measured based on the absorption of infrared light, and the unit of measurement is % Opacity. A reading of 100% Opacity indicates total light absorption, while 0% Opacity means no absorption.

Notably, the Schaller Visatron Oil Mist Detection Systems are built to last for the entire engine lifetime. The measuring heads containing the optical system for opacity measurement and the necessary electronics can be interchanged with the ones used in the previous VN/87 series, which were in production for nearly 25 years. The entire setup, including the air jet pump, connector plug, pipe connector box (VN115/87plus), valve box (VN116/87plus and VN 215/87plus), and the shock-absorbing mounting plate for the measuring head, is supported on a sturdy base plate. The VN87plus series offers various standard features that enhance its efficiency and performance. Scavenging air chambers are supplied with fresh pressurized air instead of engine atmosphere, which maximally protects the optical system from dirt contamination, ensuring a cleaner operation and extended filter life. To counter possible condensation and false alarms due to humidity around the optical system, a measuring head heating unit is incorporated.
