The Valcom OMDS (Atmospheric Oil Mist Detection System) is a specialized system designed for marine and offshore applications, specifically for use in machinery rooms and pump rooms of commercial, naval, and ro-ro ships. It operates on the principle of optical scattering to detect the presence of oil mist in the air. The system utilizes infrared light emitted from an LED, which is received by two photodiodes for measurement and reference purposes. By comparing the output of the photodiodes, the presence of oil mist can be accurately detected. The OMD system incorporates digital electronics for signal analysis, including fault detection and monitoring of photodiode degradation. The OMD detector is housed in a robust external case made of AISI316 St.St. and anodized aluminium alloy, ensuring durability in harsh marine environments. The system features two external bicolored LEDs that indicate the functioning state and activation of alarm conditions.
The Valcom OMDS utilizes the VALCOM® DIGITAL HART® acquisition system, enabling multiple OMD detectors to be connected on the same pair of wires in a multidrop network configuration. Communication in multidrop mode is fully digital, utilizing standard HART® commands for determining process variables, device parameters, and diagnostic information. The OMD detector provides independent measurement and transmission with 4-20mA+HART® and photo relay outputs, proportional to the density of oil mist in the sampled air. It adheres to international marine regulations set by IMO (International Maritime Organization) and is calibrated by the manufacturer using a certified oil mist generator, in accordance with IMO recommendations.
