Mr. Marine Instruments & Controls was recently approached by Allseas, a prominent company in the offshore construction industry, to develop a flood detection solution for the new Jacket Lift System of the Pioneering Spirit. This project required a comprehensive monitoring system to detect any potential water leakage in the void spaces of the Jack Lift System, and Mr. Marine Instruments & Controls was determined to deliver a custom-made solution to meet this challenge.
To accomplish this task, Mr. Marine Instruments & Controls joined forces with Valcom®, a highly respected manufacturer with a rich history dating back to 1974. Valcom® specializes in designing, developing, and manufacturing measuring and control instruments for various industrial processes. Their expertise and experience proved invaluable in developing a tailored flood detection solution for the Pioneering Spirit.
The collaborative effort resulted in the implementation of 28 Valcom ASL ultrasonic level detectors. These detectors were strategically installed throughout the void spaces of the Jack Lift System, covering all critical areas susceptible to potential water ingress. The ultrasonic level detectors, renowned for their accuracy and reliability, were carefully calibrated to ensure optimal performance in detecting even the slightest variations in water levels.
The flood detection system developed by Mr. Marine Instruments & Controls and Valcom® employed advanced sensing technology to continuously monitor the void spaces of the Jack Lift System. The ultrasonic level detectors, equipped with high-precision transducers, emitted ultrasonic waves that measured the distance to the liquid surface. By analysing the time taken for the ultrasonic waves to return, the detectors could accurately determine the presence of water and promptly trigger appropriate alarms and notifications.
The flood detection system was seamlessly integrated into the overall monitoring and control infrastructure of the Pioneering Spirit. The data collected by the ultrasonic level detectors was transmitted to a centralised control panel, allowing for real-time monitoring and analysis of the void spaces. In the event of water leakage or rising water levels, the system would generate immediate alerts, enabling swift response and preventive measures to mitigate potential risks.
