The past three years have been a challenging time for the global society and economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Irrespective of these uncertain times, Mr. Marine’s team have learned how to adapt, take action, and continue growing in a highly dynamic environment. After almost three years, Mr. Marine proudly announces that it has resumed its operations in China at full capacity.
The importance of teamwork cannot be overstated, and we would like to express our gratitude to the Chinese team for their continuous effort and cooperation. Their hard work and dedication have ensured our customers receive the support and service needed. Alfa Shao, the Regional Manager North Asia, is leading the operations in China and has shared his insights on the post-Covid transformations in the maritime industry, the challenges faced, and his priorities after returning to normal.
How do you think the past two years of the Covid-19 lockdown have changed the marine industry in China?
Overall, the pandemic did not change the maritime industry in China much. There are two main changes that I would like to mention. First, due to the government restrictions, the service orders targeted to China had to be covered in other ports. Second, the prices for some services have increased compared to the pre-Covid times to accommodate the changes caused by the pandemic. On the positive side, Covid-19 made service providers more prepared to handle unexpected situations in the future. Now, we can and are determined to serve the ship owners optimally in China.
What has changed for you and the team throughout the pandemic?
Strict restrictions on accessing ports and terminals in China have been challenging for the team. Still, the support from Mr. Marine’s management helped to build trust and confidence to continue our service. Given the recovery of the industry and the increase in demand for services in China, our local team is recruiting new members to strengthen its presence throughout the country. This will allow serving the vessels timely and optimally. Our team looks forward to providing top service to our customers in the Chinese ports!
What is currently your biggest challenge?
One major challenge is the inner competition with other local stations at different ports. To overcome this challenge, our team is focused on delivering high-quality services and maintaining strong relationships with clients. This integrates following the industry trends and consistently improving the team’s skills and knowledge.
What difficulties are you experiencing in resuming full operations in China?
Our team in China is well-prepared to perform any marine service. We have been working hard to ensure that all boarding arrangements are in place and that our technicians have the skills to complete their work effectively and timely. The team is eager to get back to work and serve our clients to the best of its ability, confident in its skills, knowledge, and resources.
What are your current priorities?
My priority is ensuring that our operations in China run smoothly and efficiently. With the resumption of trade between China and Australia, I anticipate a significant increase in the number of bulk carriers calling at ports in Northern China. Given this, I have to focus on these ports to ensure we are well-equipped to serve our customers’ needs. To achieve this, I plan to closely monitor the developments in Northern China and assess the resources we need to provide high-quality services to our customers. I am confident that with my focus on the ports in Northern China and the support of our management, we will be able to attract the attention of our clients back to China and establish ourselves as a leading service provider in the region.
